Dangers of Portable Generators

!±8± Dangers of Portable Generators

It is getting to the time of year when generator use will increase due to inclement weather. These temporary power outages can be frequent in some parts of the country. The inconvenience of these outages can sometimes drive one to purchase a generator so that he/she can ride out the storm and have some comforts during this difficult time.

While portable generators are very helpful in providing some electrical power during blackouts, they are also very dangerous, killing about a hundred people every year. The good thing is if generators are used properly and understood, there should not be any problem with their use.

One of the biggest concerns with generators is that its exhaust produces a dangerous, invisible and odorless gas called carbon monoxide which can kill a human in minutes. Because of its deadly consequences and odorless nature it has been called the "invisible killer." Carbon monoxide is one of the same gases that your automobile outputs. In fact, a generator can produce as much carbon monoxide as hundreds of cars.

To safely use these portable generators, simply follow one important guideline.

* Never use them indoors or in your garage - even if everything is open and well ventilated. In fact they should not be used in any enclosed space or structure. Generators need to be used outside and be far away from windows, doors and vents or anything that can suck the dangerous fumes in the house.

Other things that you should do if you are unfamiliar with generators -

* Read the manual and follow its instructions

* Install carbon monoxide alarms in your home. Even if you aren't using a generator, experts now recommend that you have home carbon monoxide detectors - just as you have fire alarms. Carbon monoxide detectors are to keep you safe in case you have a malfunction with your home heating system.

Lastly, if you feel ill, weak or dizzy and believe that it could due to a generator, get out into fresh air and then seek medical attention.

If used properly, generators can provide real comfort during difficult situations. Just use them according to the basic guidelines set forth in the owner's manual and stated above. In the meantime, manufacturers are looking into ways to cut down on the carbon monoxide that is produced in these generators which will make them safer yet.
